Riyan Parag became the second IPL captain to be fined for a slow over-rate this season, after Mumbai Indians' Hardik Pandya

Despite leading his team to their first IPL 2025 victory on Sunday at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati, Riyan Parag, skipper of Rajasthan Royals, has been slapped with a hefty Rs 12 lakh fine by the BCCI.

Why has BCCI Slapped Fine on Riyan Parag?

Riyan Parag has been fined for breaching IPL code of conduct during the RR vs CSK clash.

The BCCI penalised Riyan Parag after Rajasthan Royals were found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate during their thrilling match against CSK. The match, which saw RR clinch their first win after two back-to-back losses, was overshadowed by the fine imposed on the stand-in skipper under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. Since this was the team’s first offence of the season, Parag was fined Rs 12 lakh.

What is Slow-Over Rate Rule in Cricket?

As per International Cricket Council (ICC) regulations, teams must maintain a minimum over rate of 15 overs per hour in Test cricket, 14.28 in ODIs, and 14.11 in T20s.
In ODIs, the bowling side is allotted 3.5 hours to complete their 50-over quota, while in T20s, teams are expected to finish their 20 overs within 1 hour and 25 minutes.
If a team fails to meet these benchmarks, it is considered to have maintained a slow over rate, leading to penalties such as fines or, in some instances, suspensions imposed by the governing body.

What is the Penalty for a Slow-Over Rate?

As per the Indian T20 League Code of Conduct, teams failing to maintain the required over rate are penalized as follows:

First Offence: The captain of the bowling side is fined Rs 12 lakh.

Second Offence: The captain is fined Rs 24 lakh, while each of the remaining 10 players is fined either Rs 6 lakh or 25% of their match fee, whichever is lower.

Third and Subsequent Offences: The captain faces a Rs 30 lakh fine along with a one-match ban. The other 10 players are also fined either Rs 12 lakh or 50% of their match fee, whichever is lower.

Riyan Parag became the second IPL captain to be fined for a slow over-rate this season, following Mumbai Indians’ Hardik Pandya, who was penalised after MI’s match against Gujarat Titans on Saturday.

Rajasthan Royals Secure First Win After Two Losses in IPL 2025

The Rajasthan Royals secured their first IPL 2025 win defeating CSK by 6 runs after two back-to-back losses this season.

Riyan Parag scored 37 runs in 28 deliveries, alongside Shimron Hetmyer, who added 19 runs on the board.

What’s Next for Rajasthan Royals?

After their hard-fought victory, Rajasthan Royals will now take on Punjab Kings at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Cricket Stadium in Chandigarh on April 5.

Riyan Parag Retained by Rajasthan Royals for Rs 14 Crore for IPL 2025

Playing 70 matches across 6 IPL seasons, Riyan Parag has grown significantly since his initial Rs 3.8 crore acquisition in 2022. Over the years, Parag has developed into a crucial all-rounder for the Royals, contributing both with the bat and ball, making him an integral part of the team’s core.
