At a time when Kolkata is still reeling from the horrific gang rape of a medical student of RG Kar Medical College in August last year, yet another brutal incident has shocked the state. A law student was allegedly gang-raped inside a law college in Kasba.
The incident which took place between 7:30 pm and 10:50 pm on Wednesday has triggered outrage, with many questioning the safety of students even within educational institutions.
The incident came to light after the victim’s family filed an FIR with the police. Police acted swiftly and arrested 3 persons from different locations in the city in connection with the heinous crime.
Police have also seized their mobile phones as part of the ongoing investigation.
The arrested persons have been identified as Monojit Mishra (31), Zaib Ahmed (19), and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20), all former students or staff members of the same law college.
The police stated that one of the men allegedly committed the sexual assault while the other two played roles in facilitating the crime.
All 3 accused will be produced before the A.C.J.M. of Alipore with a request for police custody to aid further investigation.
A forensic team examined the crime scene, which was kept secured until evidence collection was complete.
The preliminary medical examination of the victim was done at CNMC Hospital, and statements of key witnesses have been recorded.
Meanwhile, the BJP has launched a scathing attack on the Mamata Banerjee-led state government over the incident.
BJP leader Amit Malviya, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), said, “Horrific! A female law student was gang-raped inside a law college in Kasba, a suburb of Kolkata, on 25th June, by none other than a former student and two college staff members. Shockingly, reports suggest that a TMC member is also involved. The horror of RG Kar hasn’t faded, and yet such heinous crimes continue to rise daily in Bengal.”
In a subsequent tweet the BJP leader said, “West Bengal must ask itself a hard question: are our daughters and sisters safe under Mamata Banerjee’s rule? The answer is horrifyingly clear: No.”
He also said that accused Manojit Mishra has direct links with the most powerful in the TMC- Abhishek Banerjee, Councillor Kajari Banerjee (Mamata Banerjee’s sister-in-law) and State Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya.
He said this is not just a crime, this is a cover-up of the highest order. TMC is a party of rapists and protectors of rapists.
