Air India Flight with 242 Passengers Crashes in Ahmedabad

Casualty details are still awaited as rescue operations are underway.

An Air India flight bound for London with 242 passengers on board crashed into a densely populated residential area in Meghaninagar, near the Ahmedabad airport, shortly after takeoff on Thursday afternoon, confirmed the Gujarat State Police Control Room.

The flight, AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, took off from Ahmedabad at 1:39 PM for London Gatwick but crashed moments later, triggering a massive fire and widespread panic in the area. Casualty details are still awaited as rescue operations are underway. As per sources, former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani was also on board.

Air India spokesperson told news agency ANI, “Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today. We are currently ascertaining all details and will share further updates at the earliest.”

Following the crash, Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, State Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi, and Ahmedabad Police Commissioner. He assured that the Central government will provide all necessary support.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed three teams comprising 90 personnel from Gandhinagar, and another three teams are being mobilised from Vadodara to aid in rescue and relief efforts at the crash site.

The cause of the crash is yet to be determined.
