The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institute awarded the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physiology or medicine to Paabo today.
Swedish scientist Svante Pääbo has been awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology for the year 2022 for his discoveries concerning the genomes of extinct hominins and human evolution.
The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institute awarded the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physiology or medicine to Paabo today.
Notably, the secretary of the Nobel Committee, Thomas Perlmann, announced the winner today at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden’s Stockholm.
The medicine prize kicked off a week of Nobel Prize announcements.
It continues on Tuesday with the physics prize, with chemistry on Wednesday and literature on Thursday. The 2022 Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday and the economics award on October 10.
Through his pioneering research, Svante Pääbo accomplished the seemingly impossible feat of sequencing the genome of the Neanderthal, an extinct relative of present-day humans.
The Swedish geneticist also made the key discovery of a previously unknown hominin, Denisova.
It may be mentioned that this ancient flow of genes to present-day humans has physiological relevance today, for example affecting how our immune system reacts to infections.
Pääbo’s seminal research gave rise to an entirely new scientific discipline, paleogenomics.
By revealing genetic differences that distinguish all living humans from extinct hominins, his discoveries provide the basis for exploring what makes us uniquely human.
