Nepal Plane Crash: 19 Passengers Feared Dead, Pilot Rescued

Nepal averages about one flight disaster per year, and the country has witnessed at least 12 fatal plane crashes, including the latest one, since 2010

At least 18 people were declared dead after a Saurya Airlines aircraft crashed during take-off at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, Nepal, today. As per reports, the Pokhara-bound aeroplane met with a tragic accident at around 11 am local time.

“Nineteen people, including aircrew, were aboard the Pokhara-bound plane,” The Kathmandu Post reported, quoting Tribhuvan International Airport spokesperson Premnath Thakur.

A dramatic video of the incident, capturing the exact moment of the crash, has surfaced online and sent shockwaves among the netizens.

According to reports, police and firefighters have been carrying out rescue operations at the accident site and are looking for survivors.

The Hindustan Times reported that the pilot of the aircraft, Captain Manish Shakya, was rescued from the wreckage and rushed to the hospital for treatment.

This is not the first time that a plane crash has been reported from Nepal.

According to reports, the Himalayan nation averages about one flight disaster per year, and the country has witnessed at least 12 fatal plane crashes, including the latest one, since 2010.

In January 2023, a Yeti Airlines flight crashed near the central city of Pokhara, killing all 72 people on board, including passengers and crew members. The aircraft plummeted into a steep gorge, breaking into pieces and bursting into flames as it approached Pokhara.

On May 29, 2022, 22 people were killed when a Tara Air plane crashed in Mustang district.

In another crash in 2018, 51 people were killed while 20 others were seriously injured when a US-Bangla Airlines flight crashed near Tribhuvan International Airport.
