The 125th Amendment of the Constitution provides for the administration of tribal areas in Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram to safeguard the rights of the tribal population in these states

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has invited Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Debbarma to New Delhi for an urgent discussion on the Motha demand for the 125th Amendment of the Constitution, which can bring about direct funding and other benefits to the autonomous councils under the 6th Schedule.

Highly placed sources told Northeast Live that Pradyot Debbarma is expected to meet Shah later this week.

The Union Home Minister’s invitation follows Pradyot Debbarma’s initiative to hold a meeting with the elected heads of all the autonomous district councils in the northeast in Shillong on July 18th.

The Motha founder has been saying that despite being 6th Schedule areas, the tribal people cannot enjoy the full benefits of autonomy without direct funding and more land rights.

Pradyot Debbarma appears to have become a rallying point for various tribal groups and political parties regarding tribal rights in the region.

Pradyot Debbarma is returning to Agartala today after a long stay in Delhi, where he met several central leaders.
