Tripura: TSF Protests in Agartala, Demands Roman Script for Kokborok in Upcoming Board Exams

The TSF vowed that the agitation would continue until their demands are met.
Members of the Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF) staged a protest today in front of the New Capital Complex entrance in Agartala, demanding the inclusion of the Roman script for Kokborok in the upcoming CBSE and TBSE board examinations scheduled for next month.
This marks the second protest within a week as the Winter Session of the Tripura Legislative Assembly is ongoing.
The protest was led by former TSF general secretary, John Debbarma, who emphasized that the indigenous communities of Tripura have been raising the demand for the Roman script for over 5 decades. Despite numerous appeals, the issue remains unresolved, leading to growing frustration within the community.
Debbarma stated that the demand for using the Roman script alongside the Bengali script for Kokborok is not just a linguistic issue but a matter of identity and pride for the indigenous people.
“This demand has existed for the last 50 years, but no action has been taken. It is the government’s responsibility to address this, yet neither the current administration nor previous ones have done anything to resolve the matter,” he said during the protest.
The TSF also called upon regional parties in the BJP-led state government to clarify their stance on the Roman script issue and raise it during the ongoing Assembly session.
Debbarma said that despite multiple efforts, including memorandum submissions and requests for meetings with government officials, no constructive response has been received.
He vowed that the agitation would continue until their demands are met.
With board exams approaching and the issue unresolved, tensions are expected to rise in the coming days. The TSF has hinted at intensifying their protests if the government fails to take swift action.
