Tripura: Protests Erupt Outside Homes of Opposition Leaders Amidst Social Media Controversy

The protests were in response to the leaders' criticism of SC Welfare Minister Sudhangshu Das, following a controversial social media post by Das.

A group of right wing activists held protests on Friday outside the residences of Tripura Assembly opposition leader and CPI(M) leader Jitendra Chaudhary, as well as former minister and Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman.

The protests were in response to the leaders’ criticism of SC Welfare Minister Sudhangshu Das, following a controversial social media post by Das.

In his post, which he later deleted, Das claimed that Hindus who are unable to protect the deities of their religion have no moral right to participate in religious rituals and should feel enraged by any insult to their faith.

Two days ago Youth Congress protested in front of Das’s residence, where the activists waved black flags and condemned his social media remarks. The Youth Congress accused the minister of inflaming religious sentiments in the state which just witnessed a communal violence at Ranirbazar and called for an apology.

In what appeared to be a counter-demonstration, the right wing activists staged a brief sit-in protest outside the homes of Chaudhary and Barman, accusing them of hurting religious sentiments through their comments about Sanatan Dharma in the Assembly.

The protest took place in the Radhanagar and Krishanagar area of Agartala, near the residences of the two leaders.
