Tripura Murder Sparks Violence: Villagers Torch Brick Kiln After Youth’s Killing

First Published: 22nd June, 2025 11:31 IST

The Kamalpur Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Madhumita Biswas, produced all five accused before the court on Saturday.

Tension erupted in the Kamalpur subdivision of Tripura’s Dhalai district after the brutal murder of 37-year-old Ashish Das, a resident of Barodun village under Chhota Surma Panchayat. The gruesome killing has shocked the region and triggered violent retaliation, with angry villagers setting fire to vehicles and equipment at a brick kiln owned by one of the accused.

The murder took place on June 16 and sparked widespread outrage across Chhota Surma and the neighbouring Morachhara area. On Saturday afternoon, in what appeared to be an angry backlash, locals allegedly set ablaze five vehicles, including tippers, a JCB bulldozer, and a Bolero mini truck, at the R.K.I. brick kiln. The mob also burned down a bamboo-and-thatch shelter used by workers.

The brick kiln is owned by Souvik Das, one of the five people arrested in connection with the murder. The other accused are his driver Kajol Das and associates Tony Dey, Apan Bhumij, and Santosh Gaur.

Firefighters said the flames quickly engulfed the entire property, destroying assets worth an estimated Rs. 80–90 lakh. The fire service team struggled to douse the fire due to a shortage of water in the area, but eventually managed to bring the blaze under control. By then, the damage was already extensive.

Police personnel rushed to the scene and have since maintained a heavy presence in the affected villages to prevent any further violence.

The Kamalpur Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Madhumita Biswas, produced all five accused before the court on Saturday. The court granted five-day police custody for interrogation. Investigators believe more people may be involved in the murder and are continuing their probe.

Reports revealed that after the murder on June 16, the accused dumped Ashish Das’s body several kilometers away in the Avanga Chhara area under Salema police station on June 17. This disturbing detail has only intensified public outrage.

Ashish Das’s heartbroken mother, sobbing in front of local reporters, cried out, “My son never harmed anyone… why did this happen?” Her emotional plea has stirred deep anger and sorrow within the community.

The murder and the fiery retaliation have left the region shaken. Locals are demanding swift and strict punishment for the killers, while authorities are urging restraint and promising justice without delay.
