Building on the success of the ‘Nesha Mukt Tripura’ initiative, which was introduced six years ago to combat the state’s drug problem, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has announced a new campaign aimed at achieving a “Violence-Free Tripura.”
The announcement was made on Monday during Rakhi Purnima, a festival that symbolizes protection and safety for women.
The Chief Minister’s call for a violence-free state comes at a time when Tripura is grappling with heightened unrest, particularly in the aftermath of recent Panchayat elections. The elections were marred by political violence, including the deaths of two individuals and numerous incidents of conflict. Among the most alarming were two lynching cases: one involving a teacher in Udaipur and another involving a tribal youth in Gandatwisa, which further fueled communal tensions. These incidents led to widespread destruction, with hundreds of homes and shops being torched, leaving many residents homeless.
Addressing the pressing issue of political violence, Saha stated, “This culture of violence, especially political violence, is unacceptable and must end.” He acknowledged the persistence of such incidents but assured the public that his government responds quickly to restore order and enforce the rule of law.
Reflecting on the state’s progress in the fight against drugs, Saha emphasized the need for a similarly determined effort to eradicate violence. “It’s time we launch a campaign for a violence-free Tripura, where everyone, especially women, can move freely without fear, day or night,” he asserted.
Saha also spoke candidly about the ongoing issue of political violence, describing it as an “undesirable but long-standing practice” in the state. He noted that while political violence has decreased recently, his government remains committed to reducing it to zero, striving for peaceful elections in the future.
In his speech, the Chief Minister emphasized on the safety of women, stressing the need to eliminate all forms of violence against them. He highlighted the importance of ensuring their safety not only in public spaces but also in workplaces, recognizing the significant role women play in both the workforce and at home.
The announcement was made during a gathering at the Chief Minister’s official residence, where large numbers of women had assembled to celebrate Rakhi Purnima. During the festival, sisters traditionally tie a sacred thread, or Rakhi, on the wrists of their brothers, who in turn pledge to protect them. This symbolic act resonated with the Chief Minister’s call for protection and safety for all citizens in Tripura.
