In a big breakthrough, security personnel recovered Rs 9.56 lakh in cash from 3 passengers, who are residents of Maharashtra.

This comes just 2 days after a whopping Rs 66.57 lakh unaccounted cash was recovered at the Dharmanagar railway station.

Those arrested were supposed to leave for Maharashtra, before a stoppage in Sealdah and were waiting to board the Kanchenjunga Express.

However, security personnel deployed at the Agartala railway station found the movement of the 3 persons suspicious.

Soon after a brief interrogation their bags were frisked and the cash was recovered.
Ubaidur Rehaman, officer in-charge of the Agartala GR Police Station informed, “3 persons from Maharashtra were arrested today. On suspicion the trio were frisked by the security personnel deployed at the railway station and recovered Rs 9.56 lakh. We have apprehended all the three persons.
They said they came to Agartala from Maharashtra 3 days back and were planning to go to Maharashtra from Sealdah.”

Investigators are also exploring every possible angle to ascertain whether the latest seizure has any connection with the unaccounted cash recovered at the Dharmanagar railway station.

Rehaman added that following thorough questioning, the suspects would be handed over to the Income Tax department for further investigation into the source and purpose of the seized cash.

Both the incidents in the meantime have sparked concerns over potential illicit activities or attempts at money laundering through rail networks.
