The TISF call is backed by majority of the groups and indigenous student bodies including the influential Twipra Students’ Federation

The Tipra Indigenous Students Federation has started its indefinite road and rail blockade in Tripura today demanding the use of Roman script for answering Kokborok papers.

The TISF call is backed by majority of the groups and indigenous student bodies including the influential Twipra Students’ Federation which has extended its full support.

Speaking to Northeast Live, Youth Tipra Federation (YTF), Jiten Debbarma said, “The cause of the protest that has started today started a long time back. We have been asking from 1967 or 1968 to allow Kokborok to be written in Roman script. Since the last 17 years, permission was given to students to write Kokborok exams in Roman script, so we were a taken aback by the recent directive of the TBSE President. The way he said that using Roman script in Kokborok exams will attract FIRs left a bitter taste in the mouth.”

He added that the Kokborok issue is not a political issue but an issue of the indigenous people.
TISF has blocked the Assam-Agartala national highways at Sadhupara in Champaknagar. Agitation started since early morning as they blocked the highway and burned tyres raising slogans in support of their demand. Meanwhile, train movement were also stopped repeatedly at Brigudaspara. Agitation have been reported from 25 locations across Tripura.

It can be learnt that there has been no communication from the government with the protestors till now.
Last night, a delegation of the Janajati Morcha, the tribal wing of the BJP, called on Chief Minister Manik Saha at his official residence last evening. Speaking to media persons, after the meet, the Janajati Morcha said that the students’ wing of the TIPRA Motha should discuss the issue and withdraw the strike.
The call for the blockade came after TBSE President Dr. Dhananjoy Gonchowdhury on Thursday reversed his decision regarding the language preference for examination and said that it would be mandatory to answer Kokborak subjects solely in Bengali script.
