Shocking: Man Beaten to Death on Suspicion of Stealing Vegetables in Tripura

The identity of the deceased remains unknown

A shocking and inhuman incident of mob lynching has been reported from Tripura. A man was allegedly beaten to death in Tripura’s Dhalai district on the mere suspicion of stealing vegetables. The incident took place between the intervening night between Tuesday and Wednesday in Chitresen Karbari Para area near the banks of the Manu River, close to the Manu Rail Bridge.

Reportedly, the man was caught red-handed by farmers while allegedly stealing vegetables from a cultivated plot leased to them near the riverbank. The agitated group of farmers suspected to have assaulted him severely, leading to his death on the spot.

On Wednesday morning, locals discovered the man’s lifeless body and immediately informed Manu police station.

Police officers from Manu police station, along with the SDPO of Longtarai Valley subdivision, rushed to the scene with forensic team.

The body was recovered and sent to the hospital morgue for post-mortem to determine the exact reason behind the death.

Meanwhile, the landowner stated that upon receiving a call around 7:30 AM, he rushed to the spot and found the body lying near the field.

Upon enquiring with those present at the scene, he learned that the deceased had allegedly been caught red-handed by local farmers while stealing vegetables. The farmers reportedly beat him severely, leading to his death.

Though the identity of the deceased remains unknown, a woman who sells vegetables at Manu railway station claimed to have seen him selling vegetables the previous night until around 9 PM.

She believes police personnel in the rail station might have further information about him.

The Manu police though did not comment on the incident but have registered a case of extra judicial killing and launched an investigation to identify those involved in the brutal assault. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and fear in the region.

Authorities are treating the matter with utmost seriousness, as questions are being raised over the growing trend of mob justice and lack of due legal process.
