Is the BJP trying to set a new precedent in Tripura by putting a permanent end to the trend of post-poll political violence?
After Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha formed a Special Task Force to deal with the organised criminal groups, criminal syndicates, extortion gangs, and other crimes in the state, support have poured in from senior BJP leaders, cabinet ministers, and the mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC).
Saha, who is also the Home Minister of the State, had repeatedly urged all, including his own party members, to stay away from violence and maintain peace after the recent poll result. The CM has now given the STF a free hand to probe.
Appreciating the initiative of the CM, Mayor Dipak Majumder said, “This government and the BJP party are against the mafia and corruption. I appreciate and welcome the decision of the CM to form the STF, which is a good step. Whoever it may be, even if someone from our own party is found involved with corruption, they will not be spared.”
While, BJP state president Rajib Bhattacharji observed that in the last 25 years of the Left Front in Tripura, a tradition of post-poll violence continued. “But this time the BJP wanted to bring an end to it, so the BJP president of the state and the CM sent a message that there should not be any post-poll violence and whoever is found involved will be given tough punishment,” Bhattacharjee said.
“The CM has taken steps against whoever is involved with extortion of money and other violence. Be it my party supporters or any other party, strong action will be taken against them,” Bhattacharjee added.
On the suspension of a BJP youth leader two days ago in southern Tripura for his alleged involvement in extortion and other criminal activities, the BJP state president said, “Law will take its own course and the party will take its own actions because the BJP wants the 25-year tradition to come to an end and in order to develop the state and maintain peace in Tripura.”
The BJP state president also urged that in its fight against drugs, along with the government, society should also come forward to make Tripura a drug-free state.
He also assured that in drug cases, whoever is found guilty, the government will take appropriate action and there will be no political interference from the ruling party.
Meanwhile, ARDD Minister Sudhangshu Das also expressed concern over those misusing their position and selling the party’s name to shield themselves from illegal activity.
He said that if someone is doing illegal activities and using the name of party, then surely action should be taken because, in addition to reducing crime in the state of Tripura, it will further improve the image of the party.
“It should not happen that someone takes advantage of their position in the party or affinity with the CM, some minister, or MLA and does illegal activities,” he added.
