Amid the growing unrest in Bangladesh and the exodus of scores of students, mainly from India, from the trouble-torn neighbouring country, Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma has called on the Indian government to intensify border vigilance along the state’s 856 km-long boundary with Bangladesh.
In a Facebook post, the Tipra Motha chief wrote that whenever there has been unrest in Bangladesh, Tripura, Assam, and Meghalaya have suffered the most.
“Instability in Bangladesh immediately affects bordering Northeastern states like Tripura, Assam, and Meghalaya. Porous borders and illegal migration affect the tribal people where land is aplenty but not the population. Land laws have to be strengthened in the 6th schedule areas,” Debbarma wrote on Facebook.
“History shows us that whenever there has been unrest in East Pakistan/Bangladesh, Tripura has suffered the most. I appeal to the Govt. of India to ensure that border vigil should be at the highest alert. GoI should constitutionally secure the indigenous population for future generations,” he added.
According to a BSF report, 1,018 individuals, including 498 Bangladeshi nationals, have been detained in Tripura from January last year to April 15 this year while attempting to cross the Indo-Bangla international border. Among them, 426 were trying to exit India, while 592 were entering.
The number of detained illegal immigrants rose in 20,203 in Tripura as the state became a transit route for individuals moving to various parts of India.
Police records indicate that by early July this year, 177 individuals had been arrested, including 146 Bangladeshis, three Rohingyas, and 28 Indian facilitators. In 2023, a total of 345 individuals were arrested, comprising 218 Bangladeshis, 51 Indian facilitators, and 76 Rohingyas.
Meanwhile, the BSF has intensified operations against cross-border criminals, dismantling networks of facilitators and cracking down on contraband smuggling activities.
The violence in Bangladesh over a job quota row has forced over 150 Indian students to return to India via Tripura’s Akhaura international check post in the past two days.
As many as 50 Indian students studying in various colleges and universities in the country entered India today via the Akhaura international check post. More students are expected to return to India via Tripura in the coming days.
