500 Students of a North Tripura Residential School Suffer for 6 Days Without Water; Protests Erupt, Highway Blocked

The students, apparently, were forced to collect rainwater for daily use
Amid the sweltering heat, at least 500 students of Kherenjuri Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in North Tripura’s Dharmanagar subdivision had to spend 6 days without water in the school and hostel premises. The crisis triggered an outburst of anger on Sunday, when hundreds of students and parents blocked National Highway-8, crippling vehicular movement for several hours.
The students were left struggling for drinking water and water for sanitation purposes. The situation reached a critical point that students were reportedly forced to collect rainwater for daily use.
Despite multiple complaints to the school administration, no effective solution was provided, fuelling frustration among parents. The school principal, Manideepa Kar, admitted the crisis, saying the institution lacks its own water source and relies entirely on piped supply water. The supply has remained disrupted due to maintenance work for the past week.
The District Magistrate (DM) and local MLA were also informed about the water crisis but no alternative arrangements such as water tankers were made, further enraging parents who accused the department of inhuman negligence.
On Sunday, agitated parents joined their children on the school premises before marching to the highway. They sat on NH-8 in protest, blocking traffic and drawing public attention to the crisis.
Local Laxminagar Gram Panchayat Pradhan, Premananda Das, who arrived at the scene, admitted he was unaware of the severity of the issue until Sunday. He said the school principal had not informed him, but had contacted the DM, who is the chairman of the school, and local MLA. After meeting the principal, he assured the parents that water would be arranged and urged them to withdraw the blockade.
The protestors, however, remained adamant, warning of a larger agitation if the administration fails to ensure a permanent solution.
The blockade was eventually lifted after several hours, but not before causing widespread disruption to movement on the crucial inter-state highway. The incident underscores the growing crisis in basic infrastructure in educational institutions and highlights the need for swift administrative action to avoid such public outbursts.
