26 Bangladeshi Infiltrators Arrested in Agartala Ahead of Independence Day, 76 Such Arrests in 2 Weeks

The operation was conducted as part of intensified efforts to secure the Indo-Bangladesh border amid the ongoing turbulence in Bangladesh

In a significant security operation ahead of India’s 78th Independence Day tomorrow, 26 Bangladeshi infiltrators were arrested at Agartala Railway Station. The arrests were part of a joint operation by the Government Railway Police (GRP), Railway Protection Force (RPF), Border Security Force (BSF), and other security agencies on Tuesday.

The operation was conducted as part of intensified efforts to secure the Indo-Bangladesh border amid the ongoing turbulence in Bangladesh. The arrested individuals were reportedly attempting to travel to various parts of India by train.

According to preliminary investigations, the detainees hail from Chapai Nawabganj and Gazipur districts in Bangladesh. Tapas Das, Officer-in-Charge of the GRP station at Agartala, revealed that the infiltrators were found with mobile phones, Indian currency, and Bangladeshi documents. A case has been registered under the Passport Act, the Foreigner’s Act, and the BNS. Authorities are seeking custody of the accused for further interrogation.

Speaking to Northeast Live, Tapas Das, Officer-in-Charge of the GRP station at Agartala said, “The infiltrators were discovered in possession of mobile phones, Indian currency, and Bangladeshi documents. A case has been filed under the Passport Act, the Foreigner’s Act, and the BNS. Authorities are requesting custody of the accused for further interrogation.”

In a separate operation, BSF’s anti-human trafficking unit apprehended four Bangladeshi women, including a baby, in the Amtali and Dukli areas of West Tripura district. This was followed by the arrest of six more Bangladeshi nationals and a suspected Indian tout in connection with the earlier apprehensions.

The detainees initially denied their Bangladeshi origin, presenting fake Aadhar cards, but later admitted their nationality during preliminary questioning.

The BSF, in a press release, confirmed that the operation was part of an intensified crackdown on the network of touts facilitating illegal entry into India. The crackdown comes amid heightened security concerns along the 856 km international border that Tripura shares with Bangladesh.

In preparation for Independence Day, security forces have ramped up border patrols and established police checkpoints along major highways to prevent any infiltration attempts. These enhanced security measures are aimed at ensuring an incident-free Independence Day celebration across Tripura.

Earlier on August 4, The West Agartala police, in collaboration with the Border Security Force (BSF), apprehended 12 Bangladeshi citizens in the bordering areas of Lankamura and Sanmura on the outskirts of Agartala in West Tripura district.

In past 2 week, 76 Bangladeshis have been arrested while trying to enter India through Tripura.
