The Manipur government is waiting for the Centre’s response regarding the decision of withdrawal of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) with the Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRA) and Kuki National Army (KNA).
Chief Minister N Biren Singh speaking to Northeast Live said,”You see right now no information is there, but from our side we have informed the Ministry (MHA) that the state government has decided to withdraw.”
However, the Manipur Chief Minister highlighted that the state government cannot act independently, since the Suspension of Operations with the ZRA and the KNA was an outcome of the tri-partite talks between the Government of India, the Manipur government and the 2 groups.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh said,”But it is a tri-partite talk. So independently we cannot out ourselves. We cannot resign ourself. So we have to take the comment and recommendation from the central government. So we are waiting for that.”
On March 13, the Manipur government had sent it’s recommendation for revoking the Suspension of Operations agreement with the ZRA and the KNA to the Centre for ratification, highly placed had told Northeast Live. Prior to that while speaking to Northeast Live, Chief Minister N Biren Singh had said that SoO groups were involved in triggering law and order situation during the protests against government eviction in the hill districts.
The decision to revoke the truce with the two Kuki rebel groups was taken by the Manipur Cabinet on March 10 after a protest rally against the government’s decision to evict alleged encroachers from forest land turned violent in some hill areas.
It may be mentioned, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh had told Northeast Live that the ZRA is headed by a Myanmarese national.
However, some rebel leaders admitted the ZRA chief was an MP in Myanmar but has since returned to the Indian side and has acquired Indian citizenship legally. Northeast Live is unable to verify this independently.
