Major tragedy averted in Assam's Kaziranga. Rhino escapes near death after collision with speeding truck. Ops on to trace injured rhino.

In a spine chilling incident, a one horned rhinoceros had a narrow escape after it strayed onto the National Highway which passes through the Kaziranga National Park; after being hit by a speeding loaded truck.

It seems that the collision occured when the pachyderm was trying to cross the highway. The rhino thereafter collapsed on the highway for a few seconds before disappearing into the thick forest. Park authorities informed Northeast Live that the truck has been seized with the help of Kaliabor police.

According to DFO Ramesh Kumar Gogoi, the truck had crossed the permissible speed limit of 40 kmph when the mishap took place. The incident took place at Haldibari which is considered as a rhino moving zone under the Kaziranga National Park.

Besides, forest department officials are on a lookout for the injured rhino. Drones have been deployed to trace the rhino.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has taken strong cognizance of the matter and said that his government is firm in it’s resolve to save animals at Kaziranga and is working on a special 32-km elevated corridor.
