Special inquiry committee to probe mysterious death of Namchi Govt college student

A Special Inquiry Committee has been formed to probe the mysterious death of Padam Gurung, president of the Namchi Government College Students’ Representative Council.
As per police sources, the committee was formed under the chairmanship of Special DGP Law and Order, Akshay Sachdeva, assisted by Hari Chettri, DIG Range Namchi, and DIG Range Gangtok, Tashi Wangyal.
Family members of Padam Gurung has suspected foul play in the mysterious death of Padam Gurung.
Gurung’s brother has alleged that Padam was harassed at college, and he even sought protection from the college principal.
Despite that no such actions were taken by the college administration, alleged Gurung’s brother.
“My brother was tortured when he was in college as a SRC President of Namchi Government College. He had called my sister crying before the college fest talking about the torture he was getting from the college. His friends had also requested the principle of the college for the protection of Padam Gurung but no such actions were taken from the college administration,” Gurung’s brother added.
Earlier, Namchi SP Manish Kumar Verma said that a lot of statements have been taken and a lot of people have already been examined, which have been corroborated and analysed.
Apart from the family members, other individuals too have been brought under investigation, the SP informed.
The SP also requested that the public assist the police and share any information with them pertaining to Padam’s death to help crack the case. Besides, the SP also added that the Unnatural Death (UD) angle is being properly looked into.
SP Manish Kumar Verma also pointed out that any messages received through social media or hearsay must be properly verified before being forwarded to others. He said this when newspersons cited post-mortem reports indicating that Padam was dragged before he lost his life.
Cyber experts have also been roped in for the purpose of investigating the case.
Padam Gurung, President of the Students Representative Council of Namchi Government College, was found dead on June 28 in the Kazitar area of Namchi, Sikkim. According to sources, Gurung had been untraceable since June 27 after he was reportedly washed away following heavy rainfall. His body was recovered from a drain the next morning.
