Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inspected the Sivok-Rangpo rail link and said it would be extended to Gangtok and Nathula Pass (the Indo-China Border)
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who is on a 3-day visit to Sikkim, inspected the proposed rail link between Sivok and Rangpo that connects the state of Sikkim with the rest of the country on Sunday.
The railway minister has instructed the officials to make it a gateway to Sikkim.
The Railway Ministry is also planning to extend the Sivok-Rangpo Railway Project to Gangtok and Nathula Pass (the Indo-China Border), which will play a vital role in meeting the defence requirements.
Earlier on Sunday, the Union Railway minister received a warm welcome upon his arrival at the Rangpo Tourist Center. He was received by the Sikkim Minister of Power and Transport, M.N. Sherpa, the Secretary of the Transport Department, Raj Yadav, State Protocol Officer P. Pulger, SDM Pakyong, Tshering Norgyal Theengh, and SDPO Rangpo, L.B. Chettri, along with officials from the Tourism Department.
Sikkim is currently only connected by road (NH 31A), which passes through very steep slopes and experiences frequent disruptions during the monsoons.
Increased traffic demand puts tremendous pressure on the road, making it more vulnerable to damage and the journey more stressful.
With rail connectivity, it will provide a reliable and comfortable transportation infrastructure.
