Sikkim govt makes unique move: 100 saplings to be planted per child born every year

Sikkim govt is firm to protect the nature especially when climate change has posed to be a serious challenge.

Sikkim govt has taken up a first-of-it’s kind move, to help conserve the nature. In, fact if everything falls in place than the Himalayan state will witness a ‘Green Revolution’.

What can be termed as a visionary step to protect the eco-system the forest department will plant hundred saplings per child born in Sikkim every year.

Speaking at an event Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang said, “Considering eight thousand new borns each year, eight lakh trees will be planted each year.”

Besides, Chief Minister Tamang believes that, “It will be an example for other states too.”

Speaking to Northeast Live, M L Shrivastava, Principal Secretary, Sikkim Forest Department said that the children will have direct affinity, link with these plantations and termed it as a novel idea. The official also believes that the move by the Sikkim govt will generate awareness among the people towards conservation of nature.

Shrivastava said that the ill effects of climate change can be dealt with only with this kind of move formulated by the Sikkim govt. Meanwhile, the Sikkim forest department Principal Secretary informed that exercise has already begun to identify plots of lands for planting the saplings. ML Shrivastava infact stated that such plantations can also be done in private lands.
