Ahead of the upcoming assembly poles in the state of Sikkim, the Sikkim government led by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has announced the restoration of Old Pension Scheme (OPS) to state government employees appointed on or after April 1, 2006 yesterday. With this Sikkim has become the first state from the Northeast to announce the restoration of the Old Pension Scheme.

The move is aimed at bringing state government employees appointed on or after April 1, 2006 under the provisions of Sikkim Services (Pension) Rules, 1990, which is also applicable to employees appointed on or before March 31, 2006.

This was confirmed in an official notification, signed by the Secretary to the Government of Sikkim, Rimzing Chewang Bhutia.

This announcement came amidst a series of welfare measures that were announced to benefit the people of Sikkim. The announcements were made during the State Level Temporary Employees’ Convention held at Public Ground Rangpo on February 9.

The slew of schemes, aimed at addressing various aspects of employment and pension benefits, marks a strategic move by the incumbent government to connect with voters and garner support as the election season draws near.
