SDF is gearing up to face the 2024 Sikkim Legislative elections. Will former Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling make a comeback?
The Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) which is the main opposition party in the Himalayan state is gearing up for the 2024 assembly elections. As part of the strategy, SDF chief and former Chief Minister Pawan Chamling will embark on a statewide “Sikkimko Maato Bachauney Abhiyan” (Save the land of Sikkim campaign) from Rongli beginning Monday.
According to SDF leadership, the campaign is being organized in response to the growing demand of the public, particularly the youth, to put an end to “regression” of the state under the present SKM government.
Krishna Kharel SDF vice-president spoke to Northeast Live and said issues like reservation of seats in the Assembly for Limbu and Tamang communities, tribal status for 12 Nepali-speaking communities, tribal status for Sikkim, facilitate the visit of Buddhist guru, Karmapa, to the state and provide income tax relief to the old settlers of the state are yet to be addressed. Kharel, alleged that these issues have been overlooked by the government although the SKM had assured of paying heed prior to the elections.
Kharel accused the SKM government of systematically destroying everything Sikkim stood for, including the sanctity of Article 371F, which provides special constitutional status to Sikkim.
