River rafting introduced for the first time in Sikkim’s Teesta river

River rafting has been introduced for the first time in Sikkim’s Teesta river at the Namthang Rataypani Constituency in South Sikkim, promoting the culture of adventure tourism.

It was officially inaugurated, today, at Mamring by Namthang Rataypani MLA Sanjit Kharel in the presence of SKM Spokesperson Jacob Khaling .

The rafting route covers an area of 6 kilometres, starting from Samardung and ending in Lingkhimtar.
Talking to Northeast Live, Kharel said that the endeavour is expected to generate employment opportunities for almost 300 individuals.

“This activity will provide employment opportunities for almost 300 individuals, which we will gradually try to icrease to 1000. Namthang Rataypani was neglected for a long time in the sector of tourism. But after formation of our government, we are trying to boost the sector as much as possible,” Kharel said.
Rafting and rescue expert Shanti Rai said that the rafting route is perfectly safe and there has been no technical glitches so far.
