‘Radio man’ of Sikkim, Yapchung Kazi conferred Sangeet Natak Akademi Amrit Award

Yapchung Kazi, known as the “radio man” of Sikkim, was among the total 84 artists from across the country who received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Amrit Award in New Delhi on Saturday for their contribution to performing arts to mark the occasion of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsava.
Kazi received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Amrit Award for his 42-year career in radio and television.
Despite the digital age, he remains dedicated to traditional media, valuing its unique role in communication and his commitment to his community is a true inspiration.
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar presented the one-time Sangeet Natak Akademi Amrit Awards to 84 artistes, who are above the age of 75 years and haven’t been accorded any national honour in their career so far.
The national honour is bestowed on performing artists as well as teachers and scholars in the field of performing arts.
The recipients are selected by the Akademi’s General Council, consisting of distinguished musicians, dancers, theatre artists and scholars in these disciplines and nominees of the Government of India, States Governments, and Union Territories.
The honour carries a purse money of Rs. 1,00,000 (Rupees one lakh) besides a Tamrapatra and Angavastram.
At least 14 artistes from the northeast received the award.
