India vs Bharat row: Sikkim CM says no problem if India is named Bharat

Gangtok, CM said, “India means Bharat. The name Bharat is on our constitution, using the name Bharat shouldn't be a problem.”

Amid controversy over using ‘Bharat’ instead of ‘India’, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Thursday expressed his support for the proposed resolution to rename India as Bharat.

Speaking to media in a programme held in Gangtok, CM said, “India means Bharat. The name Bharat is in our constitution, using the name Bharat shouldn’t be a problem.”

On footballer-turned-politician Bhaichung Bhutia joining Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), CM Tamang refused to comment but wished Bhutia well and said that Bhutia joining any party is not a topic that concerns the administration and is not on their agenda because Bhaichung Bhutia was never a member of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha party.

“He fought the MP election from Darjeeling from the Trinamool Congress party and later joined the Trinamool Congress from Siliguri to become a part of the Assembly. He was never in our party. Even though best wishes to him”, said Tamang.
