The Nagaland government has decided to do away with the deployment of Nagaland Police personnel engaged as for the security purpose of ex-MLAs, former bureaucrats, technocrats.

Addressing a meeting of senior police officials and Unit Commanders at the Nagaland Police Headquarter, Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton from the dias itself, directed DGP Rupin Sharma, to withdraw such deployments within 2 months time.

While addressing the meeting, Y Patton said,”It is learnt that almost more than 3000 personnel of Nagaland Police are attached either as a bodyguard or for non police duties. I take this very seriously.”
The Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister in a clear and direct message further stated,”I would like to request the DG and the PHQ (Police Headquarter) that within 2 months, I give You 2 months, within 2 months all these bodyguards (PSO)s, unnecessary attachment of bodyguards (PSO)s, even retired bureaucrats, retired technocrats they are attached, ex-MLAs they are attached with 4-5 bodyguards (PSO)s. So, I give 2 months to withdraw all these bodyguards (PSO)s from those retired officers.”

Deputy Chief Minister Patton in this context highlighted the fact that his government has always focused on the availability of more manpower (in terms of Police department) for serving the purpose.

Patton said,”There is an urgent requirement to minimize such deployment and attachments so that more manpower is available for policing and law and order work.”

Highlighting that Nagaland Police has grown from 1000 people in 1980s to about 26,000 in 2023, Patton stated that there is an urgent need to improve the efficiency of the department, which can be done by re-organization and restructuring the Police force so that better and optimal utilization of man power and resources can be undertaken.
