Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary said that a formal proposal will be sent to the Lok Sabha Speaker
A national-level parliamentary conference is slated to be held in November in Kohima, Nagaland, it will be chaired by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, said Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary.
Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live, Daimary said that a formal proposal will be sent to the Lok Sabha Speaker, and once his confirmation is received, the date for the national-level parliamentary conference will be announced.
The announcement was made during the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association’s (CPA) North East Zone meeting held in Gangtok on Thursday.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Speakers of 7 Northeastern states, alongside the Secretary and officials of the Manipur Assembly.
The meeting focused on addressing key regional challenges and enhancing inter-state coordination.
During the meeting, leaders discussed several critical regional concerns that require coordinated efforts among the Northeastern states.
- A major point of focus was the need to improve road infrastructure along inter-state borders to enhance connectivity, streamline communication, and promote regional integration.
- The alarming rise in drug-related issues across the Northeast also featured prominently in the discussions, with members calling for collaborative strategies to combat trafficking and addiction through joint enforcement and awareness initiatives.
- Given the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity, members emphasised the need for disaster readiness and inter-state cooperation in emergency response planning.
The meeting highlighted the importance of joint efforts and unified policies among the Northeastern states to effectively tackle shared concerns, said Daimary.
The upcoming national conference is expected to further these conversations on a broader platform, bringing greater attention and strategic planning to the region’s developmental priorities.
