Mizoram is observing Remna Ni, or peace day, today. Remna Ni is celebrated to mark the 37th anniversary of inking the historic ‘Mizo Accord’, which ended a 20-year-long disturbance in Mizoram.

Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga, greeting all the people of Mizoram on the special occasion, wrote on Twitter, “Greetings to all the people of Mizoram on the occasion of the 37th Anniversary of the Mizoram Peace Accord. The historic Mizoram Peace Accord signed in 1986 was the most time-tested exemplary accord not only in the country but also in the world, which have lasted till date. Since then, Mizoram accord has become an exemplary peace accord. Many neighbouring states and countries also take it as a model of peace.”

“Today, I implore my fellow Mizos to take pride in this gift of God we received, and to preserve it for generations to come. Only through PEACE can we have real and stable growth and development,” CM Zoramthanga added.

The Mizoram Accord, signed on June 30th, 1986, is one of the most successful peace accords ever signed by the Government of India.

Since then, not a single person has ventured out again to carry out underground activities.

“In this peace accord, abiding by the terms and conditions, I brought out all the boys from the jungles, no arms or ammunition left behind – everything was handed over to the Indian government. We abide by the Accord cent percent. The Government of India is also praiseworthy in this matter, it has done very well in its part to fulfill the terms and conditions,” CM Zoramthanga said, commemorating the day.

Speaking to Northeast Live on the occasion, the Mizoram Chief Minister said, “I believe that it is an exemplary peace accord, ever signed by the government of India with any of the underground people, and I believe not only in the Northeast and whole of India but even in southeast Asia, it will be exemplary and the most successful time-tested peace accord.”

“In our neighboring state of Manipur and our neighboring country of Myanmar, Bangladesh, a lot of problems have arisen where even the government does not exist. But here in Mizoram, where peace was arranged, a lot of refugees and displaced persons came from Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Manipur, and they said that this is a safe heaven for people who are afflicted by this kind of trouble,” CM Zoramthanga added.

To commemorate the day this year, CM Zoramthanga informed that a special function, tree plantation, and blood donation will be carried out.

Yesterday, an exquisite photo exhibition commemorating the 37 years of the historic Peace Accord was inaugurated by Information and Public Relations Minister Lalruatkima at the premises of Vanapa Hall in Aizawl.

The exhibition provided a captivating glimpse into the rich tapestry of Mizos’ lives in bygone eras while also highlighting significant milestones such as the signing of the historic accord, the heartfelt homecoming of Mizo National Front cadres, and the memorable visit of then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and his family a few days after the signing of the peace agreement.
