Mizoram CADC polls: BJP candidate killed in pre-poll violence

Former chief executive member (CEM) and BJP candidate for the coming Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) Amit Kumar Chakma was killed in pre-poll violence on Thursday night.

A.K. Chakma who was to contest from Rengkashya constituency was killed during a clash between supporters of the BJP and the Mizo National Front (MNF) at Lokhysury village. Several other people were injured in the clash, police said.

A criminal case has been registered at Vaseitlang Police Station and MNF’s candidate for Rengkashya constituency Prema Ranjan Chakma was arrested by the police and brought to Lawngtlai Police Station.

Additional Police force has been dispatched to prevent any further violence in the constituency.

Amit Kumar Chakma was elected in the 9th CADC on Congress ticket and became Chief Executive Member (CEM) and again elected in the last CADC (10th) on Congress ticket but later joined the MNF.

He joined the BJP after the MNF denied him ticket in the coming CADC polls and was fielded as its candidate by the saffron party from his home turf.

Meanwhile, Mizoram State Election Commission issued a notification stating that election to the Rengkashya constituency has been postponed till May 17 and counting of votes will take place on May 19.

Elections to the 20-member CADC is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, April 9.
