5 newly appointed Executive Members also took their oath.

Molin Kumar Chakma of BJP was sworn in as the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) in Mizoram today, following his victory in securing a majority of seats in the council.

Additional Deputy Commissioner, Zoramsiama Hmar, administered the oath of office to Chakma. Alongside him, 5 newly appointed Executive Members also took their oath at a ceremony held at 12 pm marking the beginning of their tenure.

The new Executive Members include: Kalasoga Chakma, Amit Bayan Chakma, Ananta Bikash Chakma, Supan Chakma, Montu Chakma.

For the first time in history, the BJP has taken control of the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) with an absolute majority, bringing an end to weeks of political uncertainty.

The CADC plunged into a stalemate after a no-confidence motion led to the removal of the Mizo National Front (MNF) government headed by former CEM Rasik Mohan Chakma on December 11, 2024.

Following the power shift, the council saw multiple defections. 8 MNF members switched to BJP, while 5, including Council Chairman Mohan Chakma, joined the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM).

With ZPM at 10 seats, BJP at 9, and MNF reduced to just 1, no party held a clear majority in the 20-member council.

On December 16, 2024, ZPM staked its claim to form the government. However, within days, 4 ZPM members defected to BJP, increasing the party’s tally to 13, well above the 11-seat majority required to form an executive body.

Subsequently, Molin Kumar Chakma, who staked his claim on December 23,2024 was formally appointed as the CEM by Governor Vijay Kumar Singh, effective January 28, 2025.

This political shake-up has left MNF with just one member, while ZPM now holds 6 seats, marking a significant shift in the CADC’s power dynamics.
