CM assured the victim’s family that the government will leave no stone unturned in unearthing the truth and delivering justice
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has vowed a thorough and unrelenting investigation into the tragic case of Indore tourist Raja Raghuvanshi’s murder and the ongoing search for his missing wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi.
Describing the incident as “unprecedented” in the state’s tourism history, the CM assured the victim’s family that the government will leave no stone unturned in unearthing the truth and delivering justice.
“We are working overtime to get to the depth of what really happened. There are still many missing links. It is too early to draw conclusions, but I want to assure the family that we will get to the bottom of this. The truth must come out. I assure the family members that we will leave no stone unturned to ensure we find out the facts what really happened and to bring the people responsible to justice,” CM Sangma said.
The Chief Minister stressed that the incident is unprecedented in Meghalaya’s history and has stunned local residents.
“This is a very, very unfortunate incident. Something we have never seen in Meghalaya before. It has taken all of us by surprise, locals, stakeholders in the tourism sector, and the entire community. Meghalaya has always been considered a safe and tourist-friendly state. This tragedy has shaken us deeply,” said CM Sangma.
He said, ‘The search for the missing woman continues, and we are concerned about every aspect.”
The Chief Minister cautioned against forming premature conclusions or casting broad doubts on the safety record of Sohra or the state’s tourism image.
He also acknowledged the potential reputational damage to Sohra and Meghalaya’s tourism sector but reiterated that the administration will address safety concerns proactively.
“Yes, this one incident is deeply distressing, but Meghalaya remains a warm and welcoming destination. Lakhs of tourists have visited over the years with no trouble. Incidents like these are rare and shocking even to us. We must take this as a lesson. We will improve our systems, enhance community vigilance, and ensure that such incidents never occur again,” the Chief Minister Conrad Sangma assured.
The couple from Indore had been honeymooning in Meghalaya when they suddenly went missing on May 23.
The body of Raja Raghuvanshi was recovered in a decomposed state near Weisawdong Falls at the Riat Arliang parking lot in Umblai, Sohra on Monday, while, the whereabouts of his wife Sonam is yet not known and a search operation is underway.
Meanwhile, the family of the couple have demanded a CBI probe into the incident.
