The Government of Meghalaya’s initiative to curb drug abuse is gaining momentum, with a significant push from religious and community leaders. In a strong show of unity, the Presbyterian Youth Today International Network organized a peace rally against drug addiction in Shillong on Saturday to create awareness about the dangers of drug abuse.
The youth marched through the streets of the city carrying placards with powerful messages such as “Drug Destroys Dreams – Choose Hope,” “Your Potential is Greater Than Any High,” and “Recovery Is Possible – Believe In Yourself.” These impactful slogans echoed the overarching call for action, “Say No to Drugs.”
A signature campaign to further galvanise public support for the fight against substance abuse was also launched during the rally.
Daniel Stone Lyngdoh, president of the Presbyterian Youth Today International Network, emphasized the importance of collective effort in battling drug addiction, which has become a menace even in rural areas.
“Drug addiction is prevalent, and many of our youth have been affected. It’s not just an issue in urban areas—people in rural areas are also involved,” Lyngdoh stated. We are committed to ensuring that our youth choose hope over despair and recovery over addiction.”
As per a 2019 report of the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, there are 2.5 lakh people in Meghalaya who are struggling with drug addiction. To address the issue, the state government launched the Drug Reduction Elimination & Action Mission (DREAM) in June 2023. This targeted mission aims to create a Drug-Free Meghalaya by implementing a multifaceted, coordinated strategy that leverages the combined efforts of the state and local communities to eradicate substance abuse in the region.
