First Published: 1st December, 2024 14:56 IST

The inquiry was initiated following widespread demands from the NEHU community, including students and faculty, to remove Vice-Chancellor Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla

The Ministry of Education has extended the deadline for the two-member inquiry committee investigating allegations of mismanagement at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) by 15 days.

The panel, led by former UGC Chairman, Professor D.P. Singh and former Vice-Chancellor of Assam University, Professor Dilip Chandra Nath, has been tasked with addressing serious concerns raised by NEHU’s Students Union and Teachers Association.

On Friday, the committee requested NEHU to provide detailed data on the university’s academic growth, research contributions, and analysis metrics to assess its overall progress.

The inquiry was initiated following widespread demands from the NEHU community, including students and faculty, to remove Vice-Chancellor Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla. Allegations against the VC include administrative lapses and negligence, which many attribute to NEHU’s sharp decline in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).

The committee has engaged in consultations with students, teachers, and professors to gather grievances and insights. It is investigating several critical issues, including alleged negligence in governance and the university’s stagnation in academic and research performance.
