In a big development, Meghalaya Government is understood to have “strongly recommended” the removal of Vice Chancellor of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla to the Centre.
This move comes amid the NEHU students’ hunger strike entering day 8 today and the teachers’ association and the Meghalaya Tribal Teachers’ Association supporting the hunger strike and demanding the removal of VC Shukla.

“I have sent a strong recommendation letter (to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan) requested by the Meghalaya Tribal Teachers’ Association. I have already forwarded the concerns to the Government of India and the Centre will take the call. I have spoken to the Central Government, and they are currently reviewing reports from all concerned. After carefully analyzing the situation and considering all perspectives, the Centre will take appropriate action,” said the minister.

The Minister also said that he apprised the BJP’s top leadership about the prevailing situation at NEHU and hope the issues would be resolved at the earliest.

It may be mentioned here that the students, led by the NEHU Students’ Union, are demanding the resignation of Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla and other top officials, citing allegations of mismanagement, corruption, and administrative failure under his leadership.

On Sunday night, the situation escalated after the VC’s residence was vandalised by unknown persons. Miscreants also damaged a vehicle parked outside his bungalow, the window panes and utensils inside the kitchen, CCTV cameras and an electric pole.

While VC Shukla stated that he narrowly escaped the violence on Sunday with minor injuries, the NEHU Students’ Union has denied any involvement in the attack on his residence.

Meanwhile, the NEHU Students Union has written to President Droupadi Murmu complaining against the Vice Chancellor for his absence from duty amid the ongoing indefinite hunger strike protest.

In a letter to President Murmu, the NEHSU stated that the absence of the VC without any prior notice or notification is a serious concern and reflects poorly on his ability to address the ongoing crisis.

The student union further alleged that the VC has a history of being absent or unresponsive during times of crisis. They said he is not fit to lead the university and urged President Murmu to remove him from his position.
