Sangma said that if the registration of students for the exam is high then the number of centres will be expanded
Meghalaya Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma said that there will be 3 centres for Common University Entrance Test (CUET) examinations in the state.
Speaking to media, Sangma said, “I had a telephonic conversation with the Director General of National Testing Agency (NTA) where it was decided that Meghalaya will have 3 centres for CUET examinations this year. One will be in Tura and two will be in Shillong. “
Sangma added that if the registration of students for the exam is high then the number of centres will be expanded.
“Registration for the exam is an ongoing process, if the number of registrations is high more centres will be opened in the state,” Sangma said.
The Education Minister said that the State Government has written to the central government for allocation of more centres for the Undergraduate examinations.
“We have proposed more than 5 centres to the NTA for the undergraduate exams. They have said that the final allocation of centres will be decided by the number of students. We are working to make sure that our students don’t have to go out of the state to appear for the examination,” he added.
He further requested the students to prepare well for the examination, adding that there is a large number of vacancies in the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) which can be filled up if the students of the state perform strongly.
It may be noted that in March 2023, the Central Government had exempted Meghalaya from admissions into Central Universities through CUET till 2024 citing geographical conditions, hilly terrains, far-flung locations, limited digital connectivity and lack of infrastructure . Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma had written to the Union Education Minister, at that time, requesting exemption of the state from CUET.
