The VPP issued an ultimatum to the Conrad Sangma government and demanded all recruitments be put on hold with immediate effect

The row over the roster system for government jobs continues in Meghalaya. Despite the NPP government’s detailed presentation to the cabinet over the roster system in Meghalaya, followed by meetings with MDA partners and all political parties, Meghalaya’s opposition party, Voice of the People’s Party (VPP), has decided to go on a hunger strike tomorrow (May 23).

Earlier, the VPP issued an ultimatum to the Conrad Sangma government and demanded all recruitments be put on hold with immediate effect, following which the Meghalaya government on May 19 put on hold all new recruitments and job advertisements.

On May 19, the VPP staged a walkout of the all-party meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to address concerns about the current roster system in the state.

After the all-party meeting, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma informed that a committee would be set up with members from other political parties to review the roster system and make any recommendations.

The committee would be headed by Meghalaya Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said after the all-party meeting on the roster system.

The VPP had on May 17, staged a sit-in demonstration against the reservation policy.

The VPP has been firm in its stand on the current reservation policy in government jobs in Meghalaya, which the VPP considers not proportionate to the population.

VPP had reiterated that the base year of implementation must be 2021 or 2022 and not 1972.
