Meghalaya: NEHUTA on Prof. Nirmalendu Saha’s Bribery Arrest, Says It Won’t Shield the Guilty

NEHUTA General Secretary Lakhon Kma expressed disappointment and said the association takes the allegations seriously

Following the arrest of Professor Nirmalendu Saha, a senior professor of the Zoology Department and Dean of the School of Life Sciences at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Meghalaya’s Shillong, the North-Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) has stated that it will not defend any member found guilty of corruption.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Professor Saha earlier this week after he was allegedly caught accepting a bribe of Rs 3.43 lakh.

According to the CBI, the case was registered on June 11 based on credible intelligence indicating that Professor Saha, in collusion with others, had accepted bribes in exchange for awarding supply orders for scientific equipment and for clearing related bills.

Reacting to this, NEHUTA General Secretary Lakhon Kma expressed disappointment and said the association takes the allegations seriously.

“If we look at the prima facie report, he was caught with Rs 3.43 lakh in cash. I think it is a serious matter. Let’s hope it turns out to be false, but if the CBI investigation confirms the charges, then certainly it’s a very shameful act on the part of a senior faculty member. As an association, we cannot stand by any member involved in corruption,” said Lakhon Kma.

The NEHUTA General Secretary also said that Professor Saha, who is set to retire in December this year, is one of the university’s senior most faculty members.

“He is going to retire in the next 6 months on 31st December 2025. So it is slightly sad to know that at the very end of his career, if he has indulged in this kind of corruption, it is truly unfortunate. If it turns out to be true, then as an association we cannot stand by any of our members if they are indulged in corruption or corrupt practices. But yes, as an association, we always stand by our members if they are in trouble or facing difficulties,” he added.
