Meghalaya MDC Poll Results: NPP Retains JHADC, VPP Sweeps KHADC

First Published: 24th February, 2025 20:10 IST

In KHADC, VPP dominated the elections, winning 17 out of 29 seats, marking a major political shift.

The Meghalaya MDC election results have brought a split mandate, with the National People’s Party (NPP) retaining its stronghold in the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) and the Voice of the People Party (VPP) securing a landslide victory in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).

In KHADC, VPP dominated the elections, winning 17 out of 29 seats, marking a major political shift.

VPP’s victory has dramatically reshaped the political landscape, pushing out Congress, BJP, and KHNAM from the race.

The United Democratic Party (UDP) managed to secure 5 seats, while the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) was reduced to just 4 seats. The Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) secured 1 seat, while two Independent candidates also claimed victories.

Meanwhile, in JHADC, the NPP emerged as the single largest party by securing 13 seats, reaffirming its influence in the region.

The VPP, making inroads in Jaintia Hills, won 8 seats, posing a formidable challenge. The UDP and Congress secured 3 seats each, while two Independents also emerged victorious. BJP and HSPDP failed to open their accounts.

The election results delivered a major setback for the NPP, with KHADC Chief Executive Member Pyniaid Sing Syiem failing to retain his seat.

Former Deputy CEM PN Syiem of Congress also suffered defeat, further diminishing his party’s standing in the council.

With the results now declared, all eyes are on the next steps for government formation in both councils.
