Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar has come out strongly against allegations linking him to the banned militant group Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), calling the accusations “entirely false, baseless, and a politically motivated.”
The controversy erupted after the HNLC’s General Secretary claimed that Dhar had financially supported the outfit during his tenure in the previous Congress-led government.
Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar said, “The allegation which you have seen in the news for the last few days is very, very unfortunate to see. It is a false and baseless allegation. Considering statements from certain political leaders and the overall manner in which this issue is being pushed, it seems to be politically motivated to malign my image.”
“I am here to serve my people very sincerely. We are here to protect the state, the people and the country as a whole. We are your leaders. Please trust us. All these things are baseless allegations which is not true at all,” he added.
The Deputy Chief Minister said that while a section of people is trying to spread negativity about him, he remains unfazed, focusing instead on his responsibility to serve the people of the state and drive its development in the right direction.
“The way certain statements have come from leaders of other parties, it seems the move is a political motive. I have seen many people trying to spread negativity about me personally. I am not worried, because my duty is to work for the people and focus on the development of our state in the right direction,” Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar said.
Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar further said that when the time comes, necessary action will be taken.
“You all know how these banned organisation operate. They often spread propaganda now and then, year after year. That is why we must be cautious and assess every issue seriously. We have to examine whether the matter is genuine or simply an attempt to mislead. I don not yet know who is behind these allegations. But if I find out, I may consider filing an FIR against them,” said the Deputy CM.
Earlier, the opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) responded to the allegations and demanded an impartial investigation by the government through the National Investigation Agency (NIA), given the national security implications.
Adding to the political heat, the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) echoed the VPP’s demand for a fair investigation and called for Dhar’s resignation to ensure transparency.
The Congress expressed concern that the allegations involve a former party member and now a key figure in the ruling National People’s Party-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government.
