Stung by a high drop-out rate in schools, the Meghalaya Education Department is undertaking several measures to tackle the issue.
Among the key measures are the revival of non-functional residential schools and the establishment of new Eklavya Model Residential Schools, which are expected to be transformative.
According to the 2023-24 SDG Index report, Meghalaya has the highest annual dropout rate in the region at the secondary level that is in classes 9 to 10, standing at 21.7%.

While speaking to media Tembe stated that the Education Department is focusing on reviving residential schools that were previously non-functional and has formed a dedicated society to oversee this initiative.
In addition, the state has received approval for 38 new Eklavya Model Residential Schools, which will provide residential education for students of classes 6 to 12.
The department is also adopting a phased approach to upgrade educational infrastructure, converting Upper Primary schools to secondary schools and secondary schools to higher secondary institutions.
