‘I Am Last Samurai’, Says Charles Pyngrope of Meghalaya TMC

In the face of political upheaval within his own party, Meghalaya TMC President Charles Pyngrope has come to embrace a unique and solitary position in the state’s political landscape, describing himself as the “Last Samurai Standing.”
The dissolution of the Nongtymmai Block TMC Committee last month, coupled with an exodus of his supporters to the Congress, has left Pyngrope standing alone yet resolute.
Reflecting on his current situation, Pyngrope said, “At the moment, I am alone, Last Samurai Standing. They all left me. What can I do? I could not stop them.”
When asked if he is also shift, without naming the person he said, “A former Member of Parliament in 2008 said that Charles is a one-man army.” He also emphasized his independence and enduring relationships across party lines.
Speaking about his ties with Congress leader Vincent H. Pala, Pyngrope said, “I have been in touch with Pala since he became president of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee. I never lost touch; we are still very good friends.”
When asked about potential collaboration with Pala, he clarified, “I am ready to work with anybody. Who am I? I am just a member. If I go in, I will go as a member but a registered member.”
Addressing rumours of overtures from other political parties, Pyngrope stated, “No, I have not been contacted officially by anybody, whether it is Congress, NPP, VPP, or BJP. No one has contacted me officially.”
On his relationship with the AICC leadership in Kolkata, he shared, “Whenever I go to Kolkata, I talk to them regarding matters; doors are always open for me.”
Regarding his rapport with TMC Parliamentary Party leader and Leader of the Opposition Mukul Sangma, Pyngrope deflected speculation about alignment with a potential new party, saying, “Ask me the question if I will make my own political party.”
