Sangma, who was Gambegre MLA, asserted that he wanted a strong leader to take his place and look after the people of the constituency

As the scene is heating up for the Meghalaya Congress to name a candidate for the Gambegre seat that fell vacant after incumbent MLA Saleng Sangma got elected as Tura Lok Sabha MP, Sangma on Friday said that it would be very hard to find someone to replace him.

“People of the constituency love me, and I am sure no one can replace me,” he said adding that the party has to field a strong leader to take his place and look after the people of the constituency.

Speaking to the media, Sangma said that he will discuss fielding a Congress candidate from the constituency with party leaders and the people of the constituency.

On NPP’s move to field Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s wife, Mehtab Chandee, in the bye-elections, the Congress leader said that it was up to the people of the constituency to decide who they wanted to vote for.

The by-election notification is yet to be issued, even as the major political parties have started preparing for the poll.
