Ban on HNLC to Stay, But Doors Open for Talks: Meghalaya Minister Paul Lyngdoh

First Published: 30th May, 2025 19:37 IST

HNLC has refused to come for talks till their demands are met

Meghalaya Cabinet Minister Paul Lyngdoh has made it clear that the ban on the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) will remain in force but at the same time once again reiterated that the government is still open for talks.

“We are open to the idea of talking. In fact, talking to the proscribed outfit would be one step ahead of the ban on the organization being lifted. But since they have not responded favourably (to the offer for talks), hence the ban continues,” Minister Lyngdoh told reporters in Shillong.

In December 2023, the HNLC chose to withdraw from the ongoing tri-partite peace parleys between it and the Central and State governments with immediate effect.

Despite repeated offers for talks from the Meghalaya government, HNLC has not accepted the offer stating that there is a ‘trust deficit’ with the government and they will not return to the table unless cases against HNLC cadres and leaders are dropped and general amnesty granted.
