“We are aggrieved at the violence perpetrated against women since the 3rd May 2023, which continues unabated,” NMA wrote in the letter
The Naga Mothers Association (NMA), the apex civil society organisation formed by women of Nagaland, has sought the intervention of the National Commission for Women (NCW) for the violent crimes reported against women in trouble-torn Manipur since May 3.
The NMA, in a letter to the Chairperson of NCW, highlighted two separate incidents of atrocities against women in Manipur and demanded an inquiry into the incidents.
“We are aggrieved at the violence perpetrated against women since the 3rd May 2023, which continues unabated,” NMA wrote in the letter.
The latest two horrific cases reported in Manipur are:
(i) abduction and the brutal murder of Ms. M. Lucy Narum from the Naga Maring tribe. She was a resident of Beulalram, Pallel and murdered at Sawombung on the 15th July, 2023 by armed people of the Meitei community.
(ii) The shocking incident of 4th May 2023, where two Vaiphei young women of the Kuki Zo community of B. Phainom village, Kangpokpi district, were stripped, paraded naked along the street, groped and raped by armed young Meiteis.
“The Naga Mother’s association demanded an immediate inquiry set up by the National Commission for Women into the two incidents and countless of others, which have had women and the young girls the target of this war, mercilessly being raped, killed and forced to bear untold violence in Manipur,” NMA letter stated.
“The horrifying violence and Trauma of the victims in the video which has gone viral, is a shame to humanity and all of us in this region,” NMA added.
The viral video of two women stripped down and paraded naked by a mob on May 4 has created an outrage on social media, with politicians, celebrities and the public condemning the incident and demanding stringent action against the perpetrators.
