Manipur tense: Trucks with essentials from Dimapur to Imphal blocked, forced to turn back

After being quiet for past 2-3 days, situation in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district turned tense today. Thousands of locals came out on the streets to block the movement of trucks carrying essential items to Imphal from Dimapur.

National Highway 2 was blocked at 7-8 locations from Kangpokpi town till Motbung towards Imphal and in Taphou Kuki towards Dimapur side. Protesters burnt tyres and threw logs on the road to block the movement of vehicles.

A car was also set on fire by protesters near the downtown IT Road.

Blockade of the highway with stones, logs, and burning tyres were witnessed at Hengbung, and South Changoubung till Kangpokpi town. In Kangpokpi town too, hundreds took to the streets to block the highway by piling up stones, logs, and stones at various locations.

Similarly, from Kangpokpi town till Motbung, blockade of the highway was witnessed at Keithelmanbi, Leikop, Saparmeina, and Motbung village along the Imphal-Dimapur road.

Volunteers were also seen being transported to multiple locations to ensure the blockade of the highway, sources said.

Sources informed that following the blockade, the trucks carrying essential commodities had to return back to Dimapur.

Yesterday, several trucks carried essentials entered Imphal from Mao with police protection.
