Manipur: Senior citizens take out silent rally, demand President’s intervention for peace in state

After protests by students and by the women folk, today senior citizens of Thoubal and Kakching districts of Manipur staged a silent rally in Khongjom in Thoubal district demanding the intervention of President Droupadi Murmu and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to bring peace and normalcy in the state that has seen violence for five months now.
Elderly people took to the streets under the banner of Thoubal and Kakching District Apunba Lup. They marched from Khongjom Bazar to Khongjom War Memorial.
“We appeal to the government, to the President of India, the Prime Minister to bring peace and normalcy in the state,” said the president of Thoubal and Kakching District Apunba Lup.
Dressed in the traditional dhoti-kurta, the men folk carried placards with slogans like ‘Live and Let Live Peacefully’, ‘Our Days Are Nearly Over, Want Peace in Future for Our Children’, ‘Don’t Break Manipur into Pieces’. Hundreds of elderly women too walked the distance for peace.
Stating that they are fed-up with the killings and incidents of arson, they submitted a memorandum to the President of India, Prime Minister, Home Minister and Defence Minister requesting them to hold talks with both the communities to bring peace and normalcy in the state.
The rally ended on a very solemn note with the senior citizens paying floral tribute to those who lost their lives during the mind numbing violence that began on May 3.
As per Manipur Police data shared with the media on September 15, 175 people died, 1,118 sustained injuries and 32 are missing. At least 5,172 cases of arson — including 4,786 houses and 386 religious places — were reported in the four months from May 3 to mid-September.
