Manipur IDPs win 5 gold, 3 silver, 3 bronze at 8th Int’l Karate Championships

The medalists were warmly welcomed by the residents of Moreh and the Imphal East District Administration.

Overcoming immense adversities despite the ongoing turmoil in Manipur, seven-member of Karate-Do Moreh team won 11 medals, including five gold, at the 8th International Karate Championship 2024 in Kolkata.
The IDPs secured a total of 5 Gold, 3 Silver, and 3 Bronze medals at the Championships which took place at the Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata from July 26 to 28.

Despite receiving only 10 days of training, these IDPs who are currently sheltered in various relief camps across Manipur, participated and excelled in the championship.

Upon their return, the medalists were warmly welcomed by the residents of Moreh and the Imphal East District Administration.
A special event was organized by the Meitei Council Moreh at the Akampat Relief Camps to honor the youths, including 3 female athletes, who represented Manipur and won 11 medals despite their challenging circumstances.
As per inputs, Kongkham Preety Chanu (class 10 student) and Namoijam Mahesh Meitei (Class 11 student) won two gold medals each. While, Thiyam Premkumar Meitei clinched one gold and one silver, Irengbam Pushpa Chanu won one silver. Simam Jeson Singh (class 7 student) won one silver and one bronze medal. Sarungbam Rostum Singh (Class 10 student) and Naorem Dolly Chanu (class 8 student) won one bronze each.

Meanwhile, Imphal East Deputy Commissioner, Khumanthem Diana has assured to support athletes or youths in need of additional assistance, in consultation with the Sports Director.
