Manipur BJP MLA Rajkumar Imo Singh has urged the government to allow the resumption of internet facilities in the state
With no let up in the violent situation, the Manipur government has extended the internet ban in the state till 3PM June 30.
This the 7th time that the ban on internet services has been extended to prevent any escalation in the situation. On June 20, the Manipur government had last extended the ban for 5 days till 3pm today.
More than 50 days have passed since violence broke out, the state is devoid of internet connectivity as the government has effectively banned internet broadband, mobile data.
The ban that has prevailed since May 4 was extended for the first time on May 26, and it was the 23rd day of the turmoil.
Number of times internet ban extended so far in Manipur:
June 25-30
June 20-25
June 15-20
June 10-15
June 5-10
May 31-June 5
May 26-31
Meanwhile, Manipur BJP MLA Rajkumar Imo Singh has urged the government to allow the resumption of internet facilities in the state.
Taking to Twitter, the MLA said,”We all know the situation is still tense but let us also take the positive angle and allow the usage as there are many genuine people in need for it due to personal and commercial reasons. We have already witnessed the situation even without the internet, let us see with it for few days and if it doesn’t improve the government can always block the usage as it’s doing now. Thus I appeal to the State and Central Government to reconsider this genuine request from the people of Manipur.”
Earlier the Supreme Court had refused an urgent hearing for petitions against the ongoing internet shutdown in the state. Chongtham Victor Singh, a lawyer in the Manipur High Court, and Mayengbam James, a businessman, had said in their petition that the shutdown was preventing the general public from carrying out any trade or occupation and depriving them of exercising their constitutionally derived freedom of speech and expression.
